Just a couple of reminders:

Freeride Bikes: Santa Cruz Bullit
Is it time to upgrade? One of the greatest biking dilemmas for mountain bikers (who aren’t sponsored, and for the rest of us who aren’t made of money) is trying to make your budget on the purchase of a new bike go as far as possible and cover several different riding styles, XC, AM, FR, DH. In a perfect world we would all own a road bike, super light XC bike, a free ride bike, and a DH bike.
If your riding style discipline is super focused, the selection is easier.
For instance, if you are truly dedicated to XC and spend most of your time climbing uphill and don’t care as much about mobbing the return trip down, there are many fantastic options. The market is packed full of great 4″-5″ travel bikes that should fit the bill. On the other side of coin, if you are just about DH, gravity parks, shuttling and a little hike-a-bike thrown in for good measure, your choice is easy as well. Get the sickest downhill bike your money can buy.
Unfortunately if you can only purchase one bike and like cross country, free ride & DH riding, the perfect choice can be much more difficult. The best recommendation is either an all mountain bike or a light free ride bike. Probably the best bang for the buck is a free ride bike like a Santa Cruz Bullit built on the lighter end of the spectrum. The weight penalty for the extra inch is negligible, but the rewards are massive. Plus the 7″ bikes these days really climb great.
I personally have had 5″-6″ all mountain bikes in the past and currently own a Cannondale Gemini (suspension 180mm front / 170mm rear) which really is more for light free ride, and light DH. My experience with the bike is excellent, and I believe for my riding style and trails I run, it is one of the best bikes I have ever owned. Of course I am also running some of the best parts money can buy, and that certainly helps. My Gemini has Mavic 823s w/ a hope front and formula rear hub, Formula K24 brakes 8″ front 6″ rear, Manitou Swinger 4 w/ RCS Ti Spring, Rock Shock Totem Solo Air Fork, and some fat Michelin rubber front and rear. Its newer cousin is the Santa Cruz Bullit.
A good friend of mine just purchased one, and absolutely loves it. I ride a small, but I was able to jump on his medium, and really think it is a great bike. Super plush, very stable and it climbs like a champ, with an impressive 180mm front and 180mm rear travel. If you are into huge air, go bigger if you plan on mostly DH, definitely go bigger.
If you enjoy pedaling up, or have no choice but to pedal up and live to ride down, go for a Santa Cruz Bullit, it is guaranteed to satisfy.
You can check out the Bullit at Cambriabike.com.

Bikeoptions.com Upcoming Site Changes: Cycling Comparison Search Engine / Bike Gear Deal Finder
Hi everyone! Hope you’re all having a great week. I noticed that there are some people subscribed to this blog with RSS feeds, and it occurred to me that I should give you guys the “heads up” that the home page of bikeoptions.com will be changing soon.
Edited on 4-14-08 to add: it’s now been changed! SO please make sure to check out the cycling comparison search engine, if you haven’t already. The transition wasn’t quite as smooth as we’d hoped, but hopefully everything is up and running fine now.
Right now the blog is on the home page, plus it can also be found if you click the “blog” tab at the top of the page. Very soon, the blog will be moved off of the home page of the web site because we’ll be launching our deal finder and comparison search engine. In the future, Now you’ll be able to go to the home page of bikeoptions.com to compare prices on whatever bike gear you might be looking for- everything from mountain bikes, BMX bikes, or road bikes on down to things like grips and bike shorts and socks. Right now we’re still testing the cycling comparison search engine, but I think we’re really close to launching it.
Mike is really excited about this new tool, because sometimes he gets tired of going to a dozen different bike stores and web sites trying to find the best cycling gear at the best price. Now personally, I love shopping and going to dozens of stores and scouting out the best deals on gear. So no complaints about that from me. But, I know there are plenty of you out there who hate shopping and just want a fast and hassle free experience. I know some of you enjoy having gear and using it more than you enjoy shopping for it. That’s one reason why we cannot wait to launch this! We think you’re going to love it!
So anyway for those of you who are subscribed to the blog, I am not sure if moving the blog will mess up your RSS feed subscription or not? I will have to look into that. I hope not, but if it does you’ll be able to find the blog under the “blog” tab on the home page (the “blog” tab should be visible on any page, for that matter) of the bikeoptions.com web site and hopefully re-subscribe if necessary. (I apologize in advance for the inconvenience!) Hopefully it’ll be a smooth transition, and hopefully having the cycling comparison search engine available will help somewhat to make up for the inconvenience. Thanks so much for visiting!
